Bali prisoner released early instead of namesake is hiding in East Java: Prison chief

The hunt is on for a drug convict who was released from the Kerobokan prison in Bali after guards confused him with another convict whose sentence was up, the prison chief said Tuesday.

The inmate identified by his initials CA had served just half of his nine-year sentence at the Kerobokan prison when he was released on May 15 instead of another CA who had fully served his seven-month sentence for theft.

“They have the same names,” said chief warder Sudjonggo said.

“There was a procedural error and we are investigating. We will punish anyone responsible for the error,” he said.

The drug convict reported to prison wardens as instructed when he heard his name over the loudspeaker, only to find himself released in place of the other prisoner, Tribunnews.com  reported.

“We believe that the convict is hiding in East Java and we are working with the Denpasar police to arrest him,” Sudjonggo said.

The prisoner whose sentence was up was also released after prison officials realized their mistake, he said.
